Long before Luke Littler burst on to the scene and the world becoming obsessed with Darts, The Barley Mow Marylebone has been hosting a Darts League since 2017.
When the pub re-opened in 2009 after a 3-year hiatus, Alex Beckett was one of our managers. A RADA-trained actor, Al subsequently left to go on to a lauded career on both stage and screen. However, he always remained a member of the Mow's extended family and an ardent fan of all pub related games. So, in September 2017 alongside gaffer Will, the pair created the first Darts League at the pub since the 1980s.
Tragically, Alex died in April 2018, aged just 35 years old.
We could think of no more fitting an epitaph than to name our league after him, and he would be proud to see how the league has grown since its humble beginnings.
Now in its 7th full season, every year between September and July, 32 teams, made up of 192 players, battle it out over 160 matches to be crowned Champions!
From those humble beginnings has grown something truly magical, and the league is very much the foundation of the community pub we have built. Players of all standards, from people who work in the area, to residents who live nearby, to teams who travel from afar, get to know each other in a way that merely being in the same pub would normally never allow them to.
